Other Programs

STAY HEALTHY
A free health maintenance program, has been instituted at Friends In Deed in conjunction with Al Sorkin and the Bill Moore Community Health Clinic.

In order to assist our clients maintain good health, Nurse Nancy Magdaleno from the Bill Moore Community Health Clinic checks blood pressure, blood sugar, provides TB tests and monitors the health of our clients. She provides referrals to local public health services as needed. She is available four hours a week during food pantry hours, so that clients who are already here for the Pantry or The Women’s Room can easily monitor their health.

At our first session on May 6, 16 people were seen. 6 had elevated blood pressure (over 150) three had very high blood sugar (200-512!), and three had moderately high blood sugar. They ranged in age from 33 to 89 years old.
This quick sampling of clients has already demonstrated both the desire of our clients to monitor their health and the need for assistance in health maintenance.

CAMPING
Each summer Friends in Deed sends 35 low income and/or homeless children to the St. Vincent de Paul Circle V Ranch Summer Camp in Santa Barbara for one summer session. Funding for this program comes from the Los Angeles Times Family Fund and individual donations.

THANKSGIVING GOBBLER
Each year the Pasadena Jaycees provide turkeys and Thanksgiving fixings for the clients of Friends In Deed.

In 2007 they collected over 2,500 food items from our food drives and raised enough funds and donations to purchase over 131 turkeys, 68 hams, and 205 pumpkin pies! With the help of more than 50 volunteers from the Jaycees, Warner Brothers, and the community, they made this one of the most AMAZING years in Op Gobbler HISTORY! They helped provide over 189 families (over 500 people) with full Thanksgiving meals including turkey or ham, stuffing, gravy, fruit, vegetables, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, soup, rolls, cranberry sauce, milk, coffee, and pumpkin pie! Many Thanks to Sarah Warisi, Paulo Younse and all the Pasadena Jaycees!

Other Programs:
Easter Baskets for low income children
Back to School supplies for low income children

In 2008 we will not be holding our Toy Distribution at Christmas as many other agencies now provide this service. Instead we will raise funds for the Martin Luther King Community Coalition and IMA Scholarships.
