It’s summertime and the livin’ isn’t necessarily easy!
It's summer, and while many of us slow down, take vacations, relax a bit, the need for Friends In Deed's services cranks up. Kids are out of school, so our Pantry fills in for the missing school lunches. Women come to our Women’s Room in ever increasing numbers. We pick up the pace in order to serve and support those who need it. But the pace of giving doesn't keep up. Please consider a midsummer donation to assure that our programs continue through the summer months. As always, you can mail your checks to our Post Office Box, or you can conveniently donate using the link at the top of the page.
In 1894, leaders of several Pasadena congregations came together to build bridges over common issues and community concerns, forming what would serve Pasadena for decades as the Ecumenical Council of Pasadena Area Churches (Churches later changed to the more-inclusive interfaith Congregations), energetically working together against poverty and isolation and towards self-sufficiency and mutual support.
In 2014, as Friends In Deed, we continue that 120 years of service, through:
a community food Pantry that serves 1,125 households each month;
The Women's Room , our unique day program providing care and community for 20 homeless and at-risk women regularly;
the Bad Weather Shelter, last year providing over 11,000 shelter beds for those left homeless during the winter season;
We will be celebrating throughout the year with special events, special exciting opportunities to build, give, serve - and party! Watch for news of what's coming up. Make it a point to be part of our lives this year - our Year of Many Friends. We can do what we do only because of friends like you who pray with us, volunteer with us, raise money for us and donate to us. Friends like you are what makes us Friends In Deed - doing together what we cannot do alone.
In light of the economic downturn, the City of Pasadena and Friends In Deed together are requesting that the business community rise up and lend their support to cover a $60,000 gap left the Bad Weather Shelter funding. We're looking for one hundred pledges of $600 to supplement the $50,000 provided by Friends In Deed through its own fundraising efforts.

Peter Pan Cast Raises $160 for the Food Pantry!
The cast of First United Methodist Church - Pasadena's summer musical cast is in rehearsal for Peter Pan to be performed July 23-26. As their summer mission, they adopted Friends In Deed's food pantry and hosted a bake sale, raising $160 and gathering a red barrel full of canned goods. We are - and those we serve -grateful - for their wonderful support.
Fair Housing Advocacy Training a Success On June 20, 2014, Friends In Deed partnered with Mental Health Advocacy Services, Inc. to host a community-wide fair housing training event. Representatives from a number of Pasadena-area aid organizations participated, gaining greater understanding of their obligations under the law to provide accommodations and ensure access to housing for all. Friends In Deed is grateful to FUMC for hosting this important community event.
Free Health Checks Monthly: Every month, Friends in Deed is fortunate to have a nurse from Huntington Hospital provide free blood pressure and sugar level checks for our community. Their next visit to the Friends In Deed House will be Tuesday, September 10, 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
